Great Teaching Moment: Scout Willis Arrested for Fake ID, Drinking

By now, we’ve all read in the news about Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s daughter Scout Willis being arrested in New York for allegedly drinking a beer in Union Square, and then handing the cops a fake ID.  If you haven’t seen it, click here. (www.kpho.com/story/18710922/scout-willis-arrested-for-underage-drinking-using-fake-id) This offers parents a great opportunity to talk to their teens about underage age drinking, fake IDs and your expectations about alcohol use.  Ask you teen if they’ve seen the article and what they think of it.  Share the realities that an arrest like this can affect your choices and opportunities in the future.  Talk about the dangers of underage drinking: that it can have a negative affect on brain development.  That alcohol use can impair judgement and lead to bad decisions.  And that those who drink alcohol before age 21 are more likely to get pregnant or an STD.  It’s also important to share what the consequences are for your child, should he or she decide to drink alcohol when they are under age 21.  Remind them how easily this could happen to them, and that you only want the best for them in life.
